Announcing Winners of Free Tickets for Intro to Ruby Course

November 30th, 2010 by

Almost a month ago we made two exciting announcements – the first was that SmartLogic will be hosting an Intro to Ruby1 course on December 10-11, 2010. The second announcement was that we would be giving away one free ticket to a local college/university student and another free ticket away to the co/founder of a local startup company.

Well, we upped the ante and have decided to give away a total of FOUR free tickets. We received a total of 40 submissions and were really encouraged by all of the enthusiastic responses. Without further ado:

Intro to Ruby on Rails Course Coming to Baltimore

November 3rd, 2010 by

We are pleased to announce that we’ll be hosting an Intro to Ruby on Rails course December 10-11, 2010. The course will be offered by Jumpstart Lab and taught by our friend Jeff Casimir. Jumpstart Lab offers computer science training – for normal people.

The course will be held in our incubator at ETC Canton and will cost $375 for early bird tickets (purchased before November 20) or $450 for normal-priced tickets.

But wait! There’s more. We’re giving away two free tickets to the course: one for a co/founder of a business located in the Greater Baltimore area (you can be a “technical” or “non-technical” cofounder) and another for a student at a local college or university.

Web 2.0 Expo NYC Wrap Up

November 23rd, 2009 by

John and I went to the Web 2.0 Expo in New York City last week to learn about new trends in Web 2.0 and to try meet interesting people in the industry. We had fun, and I even won a Flip Ultra HD from the folks at a party hosted by Rackspace and Neustar. This post includes my notes from various sessions from the weekend.

Google Analytics Event Tracking Overview

September 24th, 2009 by

At our last monthly technical luncheon I gave a presentation on Google Analytics Event Tracking.

Event Tracking in Google Analytics lets the web developer track AJAX requests and by extension Flash events too. AJAX requests don’t cause page views but as more and more web applications use AJAX it’s important to track the AJAX requests in addition to the standard page requests. Here are some examples of things you can track with GA Event Tracking that you typically wouldn’t be able to track with the standard Google Analytics Javascript embed:

SpotCrime iPhone Application gets TechCrunched

May 22nd, 2008 by

The iPhone application we recently developed for SpotCrime just got written up in a TechCrunch article at http://tinyurl.com/5hnx38.

The iPhone application itself is available at spotcrime.com/iphone.php.

The iPhone application has been a success so far and is being used by thousands of iPhone users every day. It is currently the seventh most popular travel application in the Apple iPhone Travel Webapps directory.

Developing this application was a fun project for us because we were able to learn the “ins and outs” of the custom programming functions available to iPhone web applications. Some neat features of the webapp:

  • Rotating your phone will cause the map to go full-screen
  • User-friendly buttons for navigating the map: the buttons are round and somewhat transparent, making the most of the small screen
  • Easily navigable list of cities for which crimes are reported

For more information and more images, see our portfolio entry for the SpotCrime iPhone webapp.

Dual 20″ LCD’s, New Computers

May 14th, 2007 by

Our company was started by programmers and computer nerds; we know the importance of having a nice “rig” (that’s geekspeak for a good computer system / setup)

We want everyone in the company to be happy and have the necessary equipment to get work done efficiently.

To that effect, we’ve decided that after 6 months of service to the company, all employees get dual 20″ LCD’s. So this past week, we ordered 5 or so 20″ LCD’s to spread throughout the office. Enjoy!

We Moved to a Bigger Office

May 11th, 2007 by

Yesterday we moved to the suite next door to our old suite. We’re still located in the Emerging Technology Center’s incubator @ Eastern. The new office – at 897 square feet – gives us some more space and should accommodate a few more employees easily. Thanks to Greg, Abou and Scott for helping with the move. Special thanks to Scott who stayed with John and Yair till around midnight helping us setup all the desks in the new space!

Happy Birthday SmartLogic Solutions!

May 10th, 2007 by

Our company turns two years old today! Some highlights from the previous year:

  • We hired Greg, Abou, Terence, Scott and Joseph
  • We moved out of our apartments and into one office and then moved again into another office
  • We’re working on larger and more interesting jobs – check out our Portfolio and this blog for more info

We have some grand plans for the next year, let’s see what we can get accomplished!
